About Westside Grovely Football Club

Westside Grovely FC is a Football (soccer) club located at the Grovely Sports Grounds in Keperra (directly behind Grovely Primary School). We are within the Hills District of North Brisbane surrounded by the suburbs of Grovely, Arana Hills, Keperra, Mitchelton, Ferny Grove and Ferny Hills. We have a proud club history spanning over 60 years.
We provide a family friendly atmosphere and our emphasis is on club spirit and partnerships with the community.
As a club, we are actively working towards creating a full pathway from juniors through to seniors. We have a very popular Miniroos program for boys and girls aged 5 to 10, junior teams for those aged 11 and above, and senior teams for men and women in FQPL competitions, metro leagues (open age group), and masters football leagues (over 35s and 45s for men, over 30s for women).

Westside was established in 1964 and was first known as ‘Budapest Grovely’. The club’s colours (red, green and white) are based on the Hungarian national flag.
The club grew from strength to strength and a number of years later officially changed it’s name to Westside Sports Club, and in November 2016 the club name was updated to Westside Grovely Football Club, to better reflect our location and position in the community.
The club initially played in Brisbane’s Men’s Division 2 for several years (tier 2 of the Brisbane competition), but from the mid-1970s and during the 1980s, the senior club’s fortunes declined. The senior club became inactive after the 1988 season but was revived in 2006, reentering the Football Brisbane competition in Metro 3 (then tier 7). The club slowly progressed up the Metro leagues and began offering additional teams for senior players.
Westside finished second in the 2012 Brisbane Metro 1 season, the highest place of any non-Premier League team in the competition.
The club celebrated its 50th season in 2013, which saw the senior men’s team compete in a new league structure introduced by Football Brisbane, taking its place Capital League 3.
Led by Michael Gooda & Bill Faust, Westside finished in 2nd place behind Centenary Stormers, who they eliminated from the finals in the preliminary final. The 2014 Capital League 3 Grand Final represents the most successful finals campaign for the Men’s team in recent times, which was capped by a Grand Final victory, beating New Farm 4–2 on penalties following a scoreless draw. The season also represented the highest points tally recorded by the Men’s first team, registering 50 points from 22 matches.
Further re-structuring of the Football Brisbane league system has resulted in Westside Grovely participating in the Men’s Capital League 2. In 2019, the club achieved its highest finish to date, coming third and narrowly missing out on promotion to Capital League 1.
Another restructure of the football pyramid in Queensland was conducted in late 2021, with Westside Grovely confirmed a place in FQPL 5 for the 2022 season.
Club Changer Awards – 2024
“It has been over a year from the launch of Club Changer, Football Australia’s Club Development Program. Since then, more than 1,000 community football clubs have engaged with the program and over 700 have acquired their 1 Star recognition for their immense work in the Women & Girls Football space” (from Football Australia).
In 2024, we were thrilled to announce that we were one of only two clubs put forward by Football Queensland as “Club of the Year” for our development program in Women and Girls in Football. To be selected as one of the top 18 Clubs in Australia is such a big honour and we thank Football Australia for this recognition.

In late 2024, the playing fields (Field 1 & 2) at Grovely Sports Ground were upgraded as part of a project with the Brisbane City Council and Queensland State Government. This came off the back of increased maintenance and facility improvements made by the club committee and volunteers.
The upgrades included the full rejuvenation of the playing surfaces, the installation of irrigation on Field 2, and large water tank & bore water installation. Additional fencing was added to Field 2 to ensure better use of the field.
As developments continued with the infrastructure at the club, additional positive steps were being made on the field.
In the 2025 season, our Men’s Under 23s completed a landmark season for the club, going the entire season unbeaten, then completing the double with a Grand Final win vs Bethania Rams.
This success was paired with increased membership numbers across all age groups, with more juniors, men’s metro teams, men’s and women’s masters teams taking to the pitch at Grovely Sports Ground.
Community spirit, friendship, family and teamwork are the underlying principles of Westside Football Club. We are a small yet thriving club that focuses on the development of Football for all age groups from our under 6s through to our senior men’s and women’s teams.
As members of the Arana Sports Association, Westside Grovely is committed to the development of junior Football in the Brisbane Northwest region. We offer development opportunities for our coaches, excellent playing facilities and access to training equipment so that our junior players can progress through to the competition age groups.
Westside Grovely continues to pride itself on its ‘small grassroots club’ family values, giving personalised attention to every player. Whilst maintaining these values our aim is to expand over the next few years creating further development pathways for both social and competition players.
The club has prioritised the progression of the junior pathway to senior football, and as part of this, increased the level of support and training available for coaches and players alike, with the introduction of a Director of Football, and Junior Director of Coaching.
Part of this progression and forward planning is to expand the offering for female inclusion. The club is continuing to grow the number of senior female teams, and encourages female participation at all junior age groups.
